The merfolk tell stories of lakes underwater that cause anything that touches it to suffocate and drown. When Selene defeated the leviathan, its blood dripped and created these lakes all across the ocean floor. In some areas, they're more concentrated than others. They also perfectly preserve whatever dies within them. The only things that can survive are a type of crab called Leviathan Spawn who feed along the edges of the lakes. They're even known to have sandy shorelines. A unique species of mussel which is specially adapted to withstand the high salinity of the water tends to coat the edges of the lake. For anyone who's brave enough to get close, the mussels have a unique taste that can't be replicated anywhere else.
