I dreamed of a gate guarded by two eyes. No matter which way I moved, one was always looking at me. These eyes had no true front or back for on both sides, there were lids that opened and closed. The first eye projected a radiant blinding light, and to cover my face was all I could do to avoid being blinded forever. But on its reverse, I stared into an eye made up of the blackest shadows. The second eye reflected back a perfect image of me in its still depths. Its reverse seemed wooden or painted for I saw no reflection even from the companion's blinding light. I stood before both eyes as they peered into my very essence. They blinked rapidly and spun. And about them were three more eyes each, smaller and identical but they stayed mostly closed. They saw all that I was, all I had done, and all that I wished to be. Around me on the floor there were burnt skeletons and piles of ash as a warning of the unworthy.
