Dutan is run by a king and has been since its founding. The birthright belongs to the eldest son and progresses through the king's immediate family. After that, it moves to his brothers and their children in order of birth. The line has so far been unbroken, but it's come close numerous times. For children who inherit the throne, a Steward Council is put in place to run the country until the boy comes of age. King Regents occur when the existing king is too old or unable to rule the kingdom.   The role of the king is to review and ratify laws. The Grand Assembly discusses issues and drafts laws, but the king remains the ultimate authority and can rewrite or revise laws as he sees fit. The king is also the figurehead of the country and is responsible for meeting with foreign dignitaries. While substantial meetings may take place without the king's presence, he is always present at the reception. Additionally, the king is tasked with resolving conflicts that couldn't reach a resolution through the courts.   In the modern political era, the divine right to rule from Dione has been challenged, and the populace is interested in establishing themselves as a republic. The line of kings has lasted for centuries, and the first king of Dutan appeared shortly after the Third Dragon War. The current king is Slovik the Feeble and is known for his violent temper. However, the military is often on his side due to blood relation, and many of the National Court judges owe favors to the king when he served as regent to his father.   The king officially doesn't own any property or assets because everything belongs to the Royal Estate. However, he has the use of the palace in Praetan and various residences throughout the country. He is free to travel anywhere he wishes and can do as he pleases.   Every eight years, there's a festival to show off the king's strength and mental ability. While the event is typically rigged in the king's favor especially as he gets older, failing to complete all the feats is grounds to declare him unfit and for his son to assume the role of King Regent provided that he can also pass them. No one knows exactly what would happen if the king and his son failed to complete the trials.
