Portable Markers are magical items that can be used to avoid getting lost. They come in two parts: a beacon and a signaler. The beacon is typically placed in the home, and the signaler stays with the person. At the push of button, a colored light connects the receiver and beacon in a straight line. Following the line will always guide the person back to the beacon. They're commonly used to help people from getting lost. Multiple signalers can be connected to the same beacon, but each signaler can only be connected to one beacon. In Praetan, luxury inns often offer a complimentary signaler to guests so that they can always find their way to their lodging. Many famous landmarks also sell signalers to tourists so that they can either find their way back while exploring the city or to use when they go home because they can always point back to the landmark no matter where in the mortal world they are.   Markers do not work across planes of existence, but they will point to the nearest portal to the correct plane. Destroying the beacon will disrupt all the signalers, and then pressing the button does nothing. The light emitted is magical and can only be seen by the person holding the signaler.   They rely on a modified form of conjuration and summoning magic. Though the items are fairly cheap to produce these days, the early models were much more finicky and harder to replicate. Very few mages had the ability to use both forms of magic, and until easier spells were found, it relied on fairly complex magic. The early models were able to navigate around objects which the modern version can't do. The ability to avoid trees and guide past canyons was useful, but it still had odd quirks like choosing windows to pass through instead of doors and sometimes suggesting crossing over the top of mountains.
