Travel can be a dangerous endeavor in Kos, and for the people waiting on someone to arrive or return, it can be anxiety inducing wondering if all will be well. People can offer private devotions to Zyrdolros, the god of travelers. Traditionally, the ritual requires several candles equal to the number of days until arrival if known or any number if unknown. Each candle is lit in turn with prayers recited asking for good weather and safety from danger. This can be repeated as many days as needed. Also, the candles should be left to burn naturally in a windowsill.   The ritual is comforting and allows the waiting party to have something to do each day and feel assured that their loved one is being looked after by the god. At many temples to Zyrdolros, there are shrines where people can offer prayers including offering candles. The candles are looked after so there's minimal risk of accidentally setting something else on fire.   For other people especially in rural areas, bits of bark are burned instead. They tend to burn faster, but the prayers remain the same. Safe travels and good health are the forefront of the prayers. Additionally, people will arrange the candles or bark into a loose circle with eight spokes which is one of the symbols of Zyrdolros. In Dutan and Kealriv, they portray the god as a wagon driver who wanders the roads with his wares. He's either an old man or a young boy depending on the local myths and customs.    In the unfortunate event that someone doesn't arrive, prayers can be read for safe passage to the afterlife and promises of being reunited one day. There are also prayers for passing word for those who want some sense of closure of knowing what happened on the road. Some people burn candles for years while they grieve, and the prayers to Zyrdolros offer some comfort that the deceased finds a way to the gods and is reunited with them.

I like the touch that some people continue to burn candles for years.
