Whenever a living thing dies, its essence returns to the god who created it. In rare instances, a person is able to see the wisp of essence leave the physical form and float away. Only the archpriest of Ril can reliably see this phenomenon. The elves believe that the being had a particularly strong life force, and the slayer carries a flame as a reminder of the encounter. Humans believe that the spirit is restless and won't return to its creator. This is how ghosts are created, and its a bad omen. The ratfolk believe that those who see it from an enemy absorb the life spirit. It often leads to an early death as those close to the deceased will be driven to get revenge. Those who never mention the sigh still seem to die of unnatural causes. The humans from the south believe its a sign of forgiveness from the deceased.
