Nightlife
He was used to hectic weeks, but this one was something special. Going from one place to another, the phone buzzing constantly, interrogations at the police station one moment, court the next and a consultation at the firm in between and then the agreement with Bennet Steadman on top of all that. The money was too good to say no to and sometimes it was possible to put them to good use.
As he had hung up the phone after telling Steadman what was up with Mr. Park not once did he think it would lead to multiple murders. In retrospect Alec understood that he should have known that, it was too late to take it back and he had to live with that knowledge. While driving back he tried to bury the feeling that made his focus slip.
When he started the firm he always knew he was willing to make concessions and make morally wrong acts to get ahead, to gain wealth, influence and later hopefully even power. He made a promise to himself and his grandmother that he would always make time for pro bono work with the minority communities but that had slipped down to merely nothing.
When Jay Jackson was murdered and his path crossed with his spouse and her son somehow he felt he actually helped them even though it was really Steadman he provided the real service to, he still wanted to make sure the widow got the money.
When Carl, a man his own age needed help it was frustrating that a privileged white girl spending dad’s money came in the way. If he himself would have been born under different circumstances the positions could easily have been the other way around. Taking care of the legal bill for him did offer some sort of satisfaction.
While thinking of the Pierce girl he stopped for a moment, she didn’t want dads help, she seemed genuinely shaken up by the thought about her dad finding out that she was in trouble, that could be something worth looking in to, but do it at the risk of losing her father as a client, no not worth the risk.
While closing up shop for the weekend knowing full well that there would likely be a phone call that would call him back in at some point he weighed two options, blow off some steam or get some much needed sleep?
“Fuck, I’m not even thirty, let’s go out and have some fun.” He said to himself while closing his office door behind him. He saw the light from Judahs office and thought to himself, “that man needs to get laid.”
Alec went over and tried to convince his friend to put the books aside for a night but Judah just looked up at him while correcting his glasses and massaged his own neck. “Alec you know full and well that I do not care for that scene.” Alec shook his head, “you know where to find me if you change your mind” Judah just smiled back.
Alec drove home and called for the driver to pick him up. When he arrived at the club the line was as long as usual, but as a regular and personal friend of Bennet Steadman he could just walk right past the line. While walking up to greet the door man he heard some girl calling for him from back of the line, it took him a couple of seconds before he made the connection, Olivia Pierce, all of a sudden the tone in her voice didn´t tell him to fuck off and that she was in no need of his assistance, “we all take advantage when opportunity arises” he thought to himself.
She had a friend with her and she seemed way more excited about the night ahead then Ms. Pierce did. Alec did his usual routine, he got the girls inside, bought expensive drinks and tried to be as charming as possible, Ms. Pierce did not seem that impressed at all and it was quite obvious that she did not appreciate the attention Alec gave to her friend Julie, not jealousy, more of a boundary thing.
Julie was fun, pretty and the perfect distraction from work and everything else that had transpired over the last few days.
It was unavoidable and at one point they found themselves in the VIP area, the girls or rather Julie was curious and what Ms. Pierce wanted to do wasn’t really something that concerned him.
The VIP area was as usual full of interesting people and Bennet was holding court, but today someone of more importance was present, Bennet got publicly threatened and did not lash out, Alec didn’t take much notice of it but it was curious. He should have been held accountable for the dreadful entertainment as well.
The night took a weird twist when Ms. Pierce suddenly took it upon herself to introduce herself to some pale man wearing all black and before he knew it he found himself along him, Ms. Pierce, Julie and one of the most beautiful women he ever laid eyes on in some weird lounge playing strip poker. It seemed like there was something between Ms. Pierce and the brown goddess much to his surprise. He would have paid more attention to them if Julie by his side hadn’t been so much fun.
He found his attention slipping as more and more clothes were lost to the pale man in black and when Julie was wearing nothing other than her underwear he put his tie around her neck but when she lost the next hand she didn’t remove the tie and chose to keep that instead of her bra, Alec laughed and put his arm around the drunk young girl that giggled at the situation.
“Man, this life never stops surprising, this night really did take a turn… Were the hell is this going?” He shrugged off the feeling and turned his attention towards Julie at his side, “let’s focus on her tonight and have as much fun as I possibly can, Monday I go back to work and she goes back to… med school was it? And it’s unlikely our paths will ever cross again.”
