Rage Across Chicago
The small fire in the center of the camp is all that remains, a few bodies stirring in the late evening shadows. Among them Jerry Price, known to the locals as grey tail and one of the elders, Natasha that everyone called Tasha.
"How is our guest?", Tasha broke the silence with a half whispered voice. Jerry looked instinctively back to his RV, "He's fine, sound asleep from the sound of it".
"That is the fourth one in as many weeks, something stirs". Tasha known for getting to the point was actually asking a question even though it might not sound like it to an outsider, but to Grey Tail, these were heavy words meant to draw a conversation he had been avoiding for sometime.
"It is not my place to speak on the behalf of Benedict, but I will say that his transition was not triggered naturally, it was forced and I believe the leeches were behind it.", Tasha only nodded as Jerry spoke, patiently waiting for the young man to come to the conclusion she had already reached before this conversation started. "He must learn" she thought to herself.
"Benedict is an innocent if I have ever seen one, he showed concern for the leeches. Something I have not seen among Garou in many years.", Jerry stirred the fire as he spoke. "I will go to Chicago to speak with the Talons, see what I can find out", he finished.
Tasha nodded again and looked Jerry directly in his big blue eyes. "And the young one?". The question too was loaded with layers of innuendo. What is to come of him, what moon was he born under, what lineage runs through his veins, who shall claim him, are just some of the sub-text.
"I will put the word out, but all I know about him is that he was associating with vampires before he was even aware of himself. If word of that gets out, no one will want to claim him", Jerry spoke and Tasha picked up where he left of as if finishing the sentence for him "nor should they if that is true".
"I want you to seek out the pale wolf, if the wurm rises once again our deal with the leeches is terminated and we must prepare ourselves for the inevitable" The words hung their for a while, long enough for Tasha to turn to Jerry to make sure he was listening to her.
"Are you sure that is necessary? It's likely that all this is, is just some locals who don't know the rules, let me speak to Jackson instead, I'm sure he can get whoever is stirring up this trouble in line", Jerry tried to make the words sound confident, but they came out shaky, uncertain.
"Our deal is not with Jackson and this incident is just one sign of many in recent days. The stone has fallen down the hill and the avalanche will soon begin down the mountain. It is too late to interfere, we must prepare for the blood moon and we will not offer the leeches time to prepare. Speak with the pale wolf, no one else." Tasha, unlike Jerry spoke with authority and Jerry could do little more than nod.
"One more thing", Tasha rose to her feet as she spoke. "You will take Benedict with you.", Jerry's surprised expression gave him away, he was about to say something but realized that Tasha was not finished and his natural urge to extend her every courtesy stopped him. "He has many lessons he must learn, let the true nature of leeches be his first", Tasha took a bucket of sand sitting next to fire and dumped the whole thing over the fire signifying that the meeting was just about over. "If he is to have a future in this tribe, he must accept the truth, else, there is no place for him here". When Tasha finished, she turned and started walking away, she raised her hand and said "Good Night", to ensure Jerry would not get the opportunity to challenge her order. She is Alpha, her words are law.
Jerry sat around the remnants of the fire for a while, occasionally looking back at the RV. He contemplated everything his elder said and realized only at that moment what had really transpired here. This wasn't a meeting, nor was this part of his education or Benedicts. This was the first counter move not to a war that had just started, but one that had never ended.
