Evangelist
A Legate is expected to be a role model of ideal Kindred behavior (at least, the Sanctified version thereof) and to offer spiritual counsel to other Kindred. While that’s true of all in the covenant, Legates go further. They are sometimes given the unenviable task of entering cities where The Lancea Sanctum is not present (usually those where it is not welcome) and spreading the truth to the benighted there.
This is almost always a very, very dangerous task, a suicide mission if undertaken alone. The Legate serves as a guide to move a coterie of believers to a city where they can set up a Temple and start converting the heathens. Once the Temple is established to the point that the coterie leader can call herself “Bishop” in earnest, she releases the Legate and he rambles on. A Legate’s expertise at infiltrating towns and traveling without trouble are essential for moving pilgrim groups like this; sometimes multiple messengers are brought together to protect the fledgling church.
A less intensive task is the more typical duty of “itinerant Priest”. Some towns have temples to the Centurion, but no one with the authority or experience to really lead. In these towns, the Legate’s job is to come through and reassure the flock that the greater covenant has not forgotten them and still supports their mission. At the same time, the Legate checks to make sure the group hasn’t strayed into heresy or been infiltrated by infidels. They may also serve as “political officers” to evaluate on any new leader who’s arisen since the last checkup. Some Legates describe such new leaders to other Bishops on their route and, if the Bishops don’t like the leader… well, the Legate does their will. Other Legates are more independent and use their personal standards and values to judge such upstarts.
