Generic 5.56mm NATO Assault Rifle
The vast majority of modern assault rifles are chambered for the 5.56mm NATO cartridge (which is essentially a .223 Remington round made slightly more powerful). Even former Sovietbloc nations are adopting and producing rifles in this caliber. Critics have considered the 5.56mm round underpowered and inadequate since its introduction in the late 1950s, but this round weighs only half as much as a comparable amount of 7.62mm ammunition, which means soldiers can carry much more ammunition. Virtually all conventional-layout assault rifles can be fitted with collapsible stocks.
