The first rifle with a detachable magazine to be used by any military was the Spencer repeater. The United States adopted it in 1863 under the personal endorsement of President Lincoln, and over 100,000 Spencers saw service on the Union side of the Civil War. Spencers are museum pieces today, with their copper-cased cartridges long since out of mass production.
