Hunting Wyrm
Found in most deep forests across Vandariel, there is nothing more terrifying to an ordinary traveller than a Hunting Wyrm. There are larger, more dangerous beasts, but these rarely come into contact with the humanoid races of the world, but the Hunters are ready, and willing, to attack any person it sees if they are hungry enough.
Shaped similarly to wolves, albeit twice the size, Hunters effectively combine the sleek design of canine predators with the powerful jaws and deadly flaming breath of dragonkin. A dull silvery grey in colour, Hunters are covered in overlapped scales of uncommon toughness, with a reptilian head and claws instead of canine paws - the only part of the creatures that is not armoured with scales are their splendid tufty tails, whose fur is so soft that it is prized for noblewomen's scarves and mittens.
Hunting Wyrms are inherently pack animals, travelling the forests in packs ranging from 5-12 family members. However they are solitary hunters, spreading out from their pack's current resting spot in order to have the best chance of finding prey. Hunters will eat almost anything that moves, and hunt by stalking their prey back to their nest or warren and pouncing upon them as they emerge from within, using their strong jaws and sharp teeth to immediately sever the spinal cord by biting at the nape of the neck.
The great wolf-wyrms will generally avoid humans if possible - they accept that the civilized races have weaponry that is a danger to them, and as such only very young and stupid creatures would willingly attack a travelling caravan or party. However a lone traveller is fair game for a bold wyrm, and they will attack without mercy, using their flaming breath to severely injure and also to cut off escape. If a single wyrm is trapped and in danger, it will let out a harsh shriek that will summon his packmates from their locations nearby to assist.
