Kaa

Deep in the endless snowfields of Iskan, the indigenous people of that frozen realm travel the lands with their eternal companions, the lumbering Kaa. Resembling a cross between a reindeer and a bison, these beasts stand at roughly seven feet high at the top of their head, and are covered entirely in thick, shaggy cream fur. The Kaa are a docile species, and as such have been domesticated for as long as Iskan histories have existed, and those hardy people follow their herds across the fields wherever they may roam.   Herds of Kaa vary in size from a few tens to upwards of a hundred, and the size of the Iskan tribe that herds them usually reflects this, with the current High Chieftain boasting a herd of roughly 130 beasts. They are prized not only for their fur, which must be shorn periodically like that of a sheep and is exceptionally thick and warm when made into clothing, but also for their horns. Kaa have three horns, a central, twisted horn that sticks straight up into a point, and two flanking this central horn, each of which spreads out into many-pronged antlers. The middle horn is supposed to have medicinal properties that range from curing diseases to increasing fertility, but there is no evidence to prove this. The antlers are mostly prized as trophies, but they are large and sturdy enough to be used for making tools and other decorative pieces.   The other reason the Kaa are so important to the Iskan is for their meat, but generally speaking only weaker or elderly Kaa are taken as food unless there is great need - fishing pools are plentiful across snowy Iskan, and there are no lack of other prey animals if red meat is required. Most Iskan view their Kaa as something akin to pets, many handlers speaking to their herd with fondness and children of the clan sleeping amongst the beasts for warmth and comfort.
