The Lost Helm of Soldas

Legend tells of the great Underforge of Soldas, a vast warren of underground caverns that is the realm of the Great Dark Himself, Soldas the Forgemaster. It is here that the kindly god works tirelessly to master his craft, and from this hallowed place multitudes of magical artefacts have been bestowed upon mortals of outstanding character and heroism.   Most curious among these is the Helm of Soldas, purported to be one of the very first objects crafted by the god of the underdark when he was still in his youth. Said to be a finely-crafted helm of mythril, styled similarly to the armour of the ancient dwarves who first revered Soldas, the Helm was as beautiful as it was practical, gifting its wearer not only the ability to see in total darkness, but also providing a measure of protection against mind-altering effects.   The story goes that Soldas created the helmet for a dwarven maiden of unsurpassed beauty named Hylda, whom he had fallen in love with. Being a shy, reclusive god, Soldas did not know how to deal with the emotions that he was feeling and, of course, responded the only way he could - by proving his love with something crafted by his own hands. He added the enchantment against mind control and confusion due to his misconception that Hylda's dwarven suitors were using foul magics to turn her mind to favourable thoughts about them, not realising in his ineptitude that Hylda was simply unaware of his affection towards her.   The helm was given to Hylda, and was revered as an heirloom of great importance by her family, who took it away and locked it within a vault. As time passed, the Helm became a symbol of the dwarves' respect for Soldas, and eventually Hylda's family became the royal family of the dwarven people and placed the Helm on a shrine in their great temple. However an opportunistic thief broke into the temple one night, bypassed the thought-impenetrable defenses with ease and escaped into the night with the Helm. None know who took the Helm, or for what purpose, as nothing else was taken. The Helm is thought lost to time, though rumours abound that it sits in the vaults of a rich collector and can be viewed for the right price.
