The Declaration of the First Lord Protector
The Declaration of the First Lord Protector is a document stating the virtues and qualities a Lord Protector should possess and the morals which should guide them in their decisions as the leader of Vanelle. It was written by the first Lord Protector, Vespasian Galba as he prepared to hand over the throne to his successor. It is meant to serve as guidance and a moral compass to the Lord Protectors of Vanelle, but also its lawmakers, generals, civil servants and administrators.
But this text has come to mean much more to the people of Vanelle with the passing of time. It has come to represent the virtues of its people and adhering to those virtues has become a point of pride for Vanellians. Sadly, however, this attitude is not shared equally among all Vanellians - let alone all members of government. A Lord Protector can be deposed if he blatantly and with great disregard goes against the Declaration, although this is a very rare occurrence.
The document itself is remarkably well preserved and is currently held in The Grand Library of Cirranne. Written on vellum with cobalt ink, it's an impressive artefact, both in size and in beauty. It is believed that the main text of the document was written down by a very talented and meticulous scribe, who may also have created the beautiful and intricate framing. The names of the artist or artists have unfortunately been lost to history. What we do know, however, is that the document is signed by Vespasian Galba himself.
The document is, of course, held securely behind glass, but can be viewed by members of the public on request. Alongside it is a second document, of equal importance, containing the signatures of all following Lord Protectors of Vanelle. This document shows their agreement to the Declaration and signifies their promise to adhere to it.
