The Traveller's Code

For anyone travelling through Vanelle, whether just passing through or looking for work, these simple symbols can help the weary traveller find a place to rest and know which potential resting places should be avoided.   Often found scratched into gate posts, carved into fences or drawn onto the front steps of a dwelling, these markings are difficult to spot if you don't know what you're looking for, making them less likely to be removed.   As shown above, the meanings of the symbols are as follows:
  1. Coin -The people here will give you money or food
  2. X - The people here are not friendly
  3. Triangle - Danger present, stay away
  4. Eye - Keep your wits about you; in this place, you're being watched
  5. S - A healer lives here
  6. Bed - Here you may find a place to sleep
  7. Pickaxe - The people here will give you a job in return for food and a bed
It is common to find combinations of these symbols where several apply. For example, a combination of 1 and 6 signifies a hospitable place and kind people whereas a place where symbols 2 and 3 are present is not somewhere you want to consider stopping. On the other hand, a combination of 4 and 6 means you'll find a roof for the night, but to avoid taking liberties with your host's hospitality as they are keeping a close eye on you. Symbols 3 and 7 placed together means that there is work to be found, but that it's dangerous.   As you can imagine, there are many more combinations and even several more symbols as well as variations of these 7 symbols, however, these seem to be regional. This document's purpose is to provide an overview of symbols which can be found, understood and utilised throughout The Protectorate of Vanelle.
