The Verdant Ocean
The Verdant Ocean is a vast body of salt water stretching from the very north of Vanelle to the far south and beyond. How far east it stretches has yet to be discovered. Many have set sail with the ambition to do so, but non have returned. Near the northeastern coast of Vanelle are several groups of islands, among them, the Kynath Archipelago which is the home of the only people the The Protectorate of Vanelle has yet been able to subjugate. To the southeast is a lone weathered island, the Isle of Irricam, but that is as far into the eastern reaches of the Verdant Ocean that any Vanellian ships have ventured and returned.
The Verdant Ocean is host to the deity, Kynath of the Deep, a vast sea serpent said to have granted his favour to the Warriors of Kynath. He is also said to have been the cause of The Drowning Wave, a devastating tsunami that wiped out a large part of the fertile southern farmlands of Vanelle, turning them into an inhospitable bog.
Nevertheless, the Verdant Ocean is as bountiful as it is inhospitable, feeding both the people of the capital, Cirranne as well as the many smaller fishing villages dotted along its coast. In addition to fish, the ocean provides an abundance of seaweed, as well as various delicacies such as lobster and scollops.
