Varaha
The Year of Norn
Lean in my child, for do you know how the first trees were born? How the rocks grew from dust?
Know you the true story of the twin moons, Dol'kar and Jin'tao, and the darkness that surrounds them? And of the Everymother, Norn, and her daughter Aera, and how she came to shine upon us?
Far before the our grandfather's caught the first fish, carved their first she standing stone, there was Nothing. Ukanos was his name, the decayer, the unseeable.
Around Ukanos was only darkness, and the world was nothing but pure chaos.
But from the infinite chaos, the impossible happened. Out stepped from the void, Everything. Norn, the Everymother, heavy with child.
From Her swollen belly came the First Ones.
First came Ainar, a hummingbird made of spirits. Kinetic, transient, turbulent. His wings create the winds on which the souls of all creatures are carried. He brings the clouds and the storms, the changing of the season's.
Then, Jin'tao, a beautiful silver fish, as long as a Mightwood tree, that could fly through the darkness with her fins. Saddened by the Eternal Nothing, she created the Primeval seas from a single teardrop.
Terrarum, a Mighty beetle with jaws the size of a Roc's wingspan. Stalwart, stubborn, loyal. He created the land by rolling dust with his hind legs into a ball.
He like to tease his sister, Jin'tao, and built cliffs and mighty furrows block and excite the seas to frustrate her. He burrowed deep, making our lands and the Deep beneath.
Dol'Kar, a goliath leopard with a mane of flame. He is the catalyst, the changer. He courses through Terrarum's burrows, melting stone into obsidian. Where Dol'kar scorched, Jiantia healed. Where Jiantia flooded, Dol'kar would dry. Where Ainar's lightening strikes, Dol'kar spreads.
Together, their passionate opposition became like a beautiful dance, and where they danced the world twisted and changed, renewed and turned.
However, the world they created sat in still darkness. Beautiful, but empty and unseen.
This saddened the Everymother. She saw her children's creations were unappreciated.
Wanting another child, she approached Ukanos. She asked him to sire her a final child. Ukanos was torn, for he loved Norn dearly, but was jealous of creations, her emotions.
Eventually he agreed. The Everymother was to birth again.
Aera, the Light. Of rebirth, warmth and the bloom in our sky. She shone brightly on to Varaha, illuminating the work of the First Ones.
Ukanos felt betrayed, as Aera's light uncovered his darkness. So with spite, he deceived the Everymother into having a final child.
Ubtao, of Time, of Death. As soon as Time was created, suddenly what was eternal had an end. Mountains must crumble, rivers dry, spirits must leave the world and return to nothing, 'Ukanos'.
Norn and the First Ones were furious. They fought with Ukanos for an age before he retreated back into Nothing. But they could not stop Ubtao, Time, as anything that approached him would soon and surely die
instead, they made peace with a compromise. They created our Paths.
Everything has a path, just as Everything has its time. And until we have completed our path, Time cannot have us. When we complete our path, Time still return us to the Everymother.
However, it we stray from our path, we will become Nothing.
That's why we always say to Stay on your Path. No matter how winding or labyrinthine it may seem.
Sometimes you may not know which way to turn. In those times, look to the Everymother and the First ones, and they will show you the way.
