History
Graten was a volcano that was settled by a group of adventures in 148 the adventurers harnessed the power of the volcano and channeled it into their weapons. The volcano became dormant and it was discovered that where lava used to be valuable ores and mineral veins now lie. The town became a hidden prosperous mining community with the adventurers setting themselves up as dictators. The farther down you lived the richer you were. However, eventually, the adventurers passed away and the town resorted to electing a mayor. The town has some unique cultural practices, where you are not allowed to leave until you prove yourself in a coming of age trip where you go into the lava caverns with no equipment and don't leave until you find something valuable. The more valuable your find the more respected you are in culture. The town rarely trades with outsiders. They prefer isolation and often don't care about the politics of the rest of the continent. In the year 950, the mayor officially declared Graten as its own country. Emperor Leck did not protest.
Description
You wouldn't recognize Graten until you were right on top of it. The once active volcano is now little more than a large hill next to a forest, but when you climb that hill you will find a 600-foot wide hole, and looking down it you will see buildings built into the walls and even farther down you will see trees and a river flowing through the bottom of the cavern. There is a pulley elevator system that outsiders can use to get down for a price. If you enter the lava caverns you will see huge rivers of fire as well as sprawling pathways and massive openings.
