History
Winterkeep was settled in the year 842 by an adventuring hero named Kalvin who cleared out a fortress that was ruled by the vain white dragon Tourxal. Kalvin slew Tourxal in his keep and took it over, bringing his friends and allies in later to settle the land. Kalvin became king of the land of Winterkeep with Emperor Leck's permission, and Kalvin’s line still rules to this day. The keep spread its control out to the neighboring regions nearby and the kingdom of Winterkeep rules over The Frozen Soul, Rotwood, and, The Chainlands. Because of Winterkeeps supposed lack of value and its isolated nature, it is often forgotten about by Astirians and is not a Kingdom that many people know of at all.
Description
Winterkeep is tucked between the Ragnarok Mountains and is hidden from most of the rest of the world. The path to get to Winterkeep involves trudging along a narrow mountainside path thousands of feet up from the rapid river that passes through it below. Winterkeep is a small fortress built into a mountainside surrounded by icy plains called The Frozen Soul. The fortress has around 30 guards who control the region and is ruled by Kalvor. There are lots of tunnels carved in the mountains around by the dragon Tourxal, there are also passageways through the mountains that lead to The Chainlands and Rotwood. The people of Winterkeep spend most of their time farming with indoor hydroponics. Greenhouses are all over Winterkeep. There is a large wooden Elevator that lifts people up and down to the Freenor river, where villagers collect water for their crops. Because the Frozen Soul has so many caves and outcroppings, monsters find these locations ideal to dwell in and a variety of beasts can be found there. When true winter hits all the citizens are forced to stay indoors and sometimes get snowed in for weeks, because of this many underground passages are dug under homes that lead back to the keep. Inside the keep is a tree known as the Frostbranch, citizens pray at this tree to the Goddess Auril The Frostmaiden they pray at this tree out of fear that the god will give them an unfavorable winter and cause death to spread to the town.
