Highlanders

Also known as the Children of Ash, named that after the Burning War. Highlanders are very light-skinned, with fair hair and light eyes, usually blonde and blue respectively. They are short and stocky, muscular and strong, but hold more weight than others. Highlanders are also very hairy, usually sporting large beards and long hair. They wear tunics, loose-fighting shirts, and often large cloaks topped with fur or made from an animal itself. Many are starting to wear a kilted pattern as well. Highlanders are headstrong and independent, living secluded to the sovereign empire. They treat each other as family and are warm and welcoming to any other Highlander, but are very mistrusting of outsiders. Stealing and dishonesty is as bad as murder in the highlands. After the Burning War, clan names were outlawed, and the clans were forced to settle into towns to follow Iron Law. The old Highland clans:
  • Bloodwolf - known to fight back against their Iron oppressors. Fought in a rebellion that caused almost all Bloodwolves to be wiped out.
  • Oakhart - A stag with antlers of oak wood.
  • Raveneye - The all-seeing eyes of ravens, flying high overhead.
  • Bearclaw
  • Snakefang
  • Thunderhoof
  • Boarhide
  • Eaglecrest
Titles are earned/given to Highlanders and usually tell of their exploits or personality. Examples include: Stormheart, Ironwolf, Winterborn, etc.
The Highland people cannot have surnames as this is seen as blasphemously copying Iron House noble names, so they refer to themselves as __son, or __dottir. For example, the son of Bjorn might be Leif Bjornsson, and the daughter might be Siga Bjornsdottir.
In the Eastern part of the Highlands, old customs have preserved. They are seafarers, in dragon boats and live off the sea through raiding and trading. They are warriors and sailors in one.
