Spellbook

A Soulomancer's spellbook is their most prized possession.  A Soulomancer’s spellbook is a unique compilation of spells, with its own decorative flourishes and margin notes. It might be plain, functional leather volume received as a gift from a master, a finely bound gilt-edged tome found in an ancient library, or even a loose collection of notes scrounged together after losing a previous spellbook in a mishap. A Soulomancer is urged to put notes on each spell that help them specifically remember and cast the spells.   Because of a Soulomancer's dedication to one element during their studies, and then usually one aspect of that element, each spellbook is very unique. A Soulomancer who favors Water spells focused around dreams and putting people to sleep will not be able to use a Spellbook belonging to a Fire Soulomancer focused on causing as much damage as possible in a single blast.

SPELLS

Spells inside are ordered first by difficulty level. The higher level a spell is, the more difficult it is to cast correctly and/or the more souls are required to cast it. For simplicities sake, the Thorn has assigned spell levels names that correspond with a student’s level. Then, they are ordered alphabetically.
  • Crown Spell – 1st years. A Crown Octavo is a student in their first year at the Thorn. They are restricted to single-element spells and cannot hold more than a few souls at once.
  • Royal Spell – 2nd years. A Royal Octavo is a student in their second year at the Thorn. They can now start to learn more difficult variations of single-element spells that require longer and more difficult casting processes and are taught a few basic combination spells.
  • Super Spell – 3rd years. A Super Octavo is a student that passed the End of Year Royal test once they completed their second year. Someone who fails the test must stay as a Royal Octavo and take the test again next year. At the Super level, the students are required to choose a single element to specialize in.
  • Imperial Spell – 4th years. An Imperial Octavo is a student granted an advance from Super by their teachers.
  • Quarto Spell – Spells engineered and discovered by full Soulomancers, or Quarto’s, who have created something much more difficult and dangerous than is allowed in the Thorn. A student graduates to a Quarto when they produce a thesis and ingenious new spell. The standard for Professors and Soulomancer graduates. They hold an advanced spellbook rife with spells and are very powerful and knowledgeable. Most view this as the ultimate goal and Folio is only for those who dedicate their life to study. Jenifire Vaele trying for Folio (EARTH).
  • Folio Spell – Only a few spells come under this category for the devastating number of souls required and/or the immense difficulty to cast and/or the in depth knowledge and understanding of the elements used and/or the spells repercussions. A Folio Soulomancer is the top of their field. They have published works of various magical substances and hold a fully completed Spellbook. Professor Shake (AIR), the Dean Sentel (WATER), and Aethelon Sentel(ARCANE). A Soulomancer is granted the title of Folio when they create a theoretic folio with avant-garde discoveries and new spells or theories, denoting their mastery of their field. The folio is read by all other Soulomancers within the Thorn’s upper field, who determine if it is ground-breaking enough to grant them the title of Folio.
