Dwarven

Society

The society of the dwarves is stuctured around the Mine clans known as Taighs in dwarven. Traditionally a Taigh was comprised all the dwarves that worked and lived in a particular mining shaft. Dwarven society has progressed a lot since this phase was formed and it is now used in a much wider sense also including military orders, priesthoods and other trades.   Essentially all civilized dwarves recognize the authority of the Emperor, the Ard-Righ in dwarven, although the individual mines and Taighs have large amounts of self determination and have their own law interpreters.

List of Taighs

Ord -- The Hammers of Moradin, a prominent elite military order
Sagart Moradin -- The main church of the Dwarven deity Moradin, the world smith
Deigh -- the iceminers of Silver Lake
Ceardann -- The Forge, a prominent noble family
Gobha -- Smith
Clachair -- Mason
Saoir -- Carpenters guild

Culture

Common Etiquette rules

Greeting:   If the dwarves in question have not met before or are enemies the initial greeting is very formal.   Both parties tap their weapons on the ground in front of them. The part that initiated the greeting says "May the rock be true under your feet". The second party responds "May the mountain ever stand above your head". The parties then exchange their Taighs and close with "At your service"

Common Dress code

A dwarf is not considered properly dressed if he has no weapon upon his person and it is therefore used in formal greetings. The most traditional weapons are waraxes but hammers, swords and flails are also culturally acceptable. Bows are considered tools and not weapons however.

The Faínn

Social status is marked by rings braided into ones beard. Normal working dwarves have a stone ring made from granite, known as a Faínn. Higher ranked dwarves within a workplace gain more rings until they have three whereupon they gain a ring of a higher rated material according to the list below. The awarding of a ring is done by a local lord or mine chief.
Material Number Equivalent rank
Granite 1 Commoner
Granite 2 Team leader
Granite 3 Manager of ~15 dwarves
Bronze 1 Wealthy Merchant
Bronze 2 City Council member
Bronze 3 City Council head
Gold 1 Noble
Gold 2 Local Lord
Gold 3 Ard-Righ -- Emperor
If one commits a crime one is forced to use a wooden ring.   The military dwarves use steel and adamantine Faínns.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

All Dwarves have beards. All of them. Not having a beard is very close to not being a dwarf and part of the punishment for the most severe crimes is having your bear ritually shaved off.   The beard is a very common marker of status among the dwarves and is judged both on length and personal grooming. An unkempt beard means that you find no value in yourself and is seen as a disgrace.
