Full moon river
The full moon river can grant any wish, but those of a foul mind beware! All along the Hir river valley this tale can be heard from the old women both encouraging the youngsters to partake but also to take heed.
The story originates from a tale of a young woman names Maseri who was lived in a small village along the river valley long ago. When she was a small child her familys house burned down and she was badly burned all over her body and face. She pulled through thanks to the tender care of the local herbalist but she was left permanently disfigured.
Due to her disfigurement she was forced to sit on the sidelines and watch as the otherse of her age danced, feasted and fell in love. She did not hate them for it but felt only a great longing, a wish for such a life for herself. Whenever she was out during the day her visage drew stares, and averted gazes, wich were in some ways even worse. She therefore took to going out only during the night if she could help it, and spent many hours sitting by the rivers edge watching the slowly flowing waters.
One night as she did this, the full moon shone unusually bright and she found herself wishing with all her heart that her life could simply be normal, that she could be as all the others. As she looked upon the waters surface it seemed to her that the shimmering silver moonlight started to coalesce. It seemed to take the shape of a man, bright as the moon itself. She could not believe this so she decided to get closer to the water, so as to see whether it was simply the perspective causing this illusion. Yet the man remained. As she stood upon the bank, the man rose up from the surface of the water, stretched out a hand and beckoned for her to come and join him. She found herself taking his hand and wading into the river. As the water covered her head she heard a voice in her head that said "You have suffered enough, be cleansed child".
Next thing she new she was lying on the riverbank, her clothes all wet. Immediately she rushed to the waters edge and gazed into it but saw only the mirror image of herself, the man was not to be found. But as she looked again upon the image she realized that her skin was no longer burned and blistered, but perfectly smooth as if the fire had never happened.
The next day there was great commotion in the village and all wanted to know how this miracle had occured. Maseri, who did not know how or why it occured told them the full story and the next night the riverbank was crowded with people, all wanting to get their wishes fullfilled. Again the river spirit arose from the water and a young maiden strode forward into the water saying "I wish to marry a wealthy and handsome man". As she walked into the river and the water covered her head the moonlight suddenly shifted, from silvery white to a deep crimson red and then quickly fading into deepest black. As the normal moonlight returned there was no sign of the maiden except for a small pool of blood slowly drifting down the river. The remaining villagers then turned on Maseri, accusing her of witchcraft and driving her out of the village.
