Goblin
The small, furred people of Vrann have a bad reputation in the south due to their differing cultural sensibilities, but they should not be dismissed as barbarians. Goblin culture rewards daring and mischief, and it can be difficult for them to adjust to more restrained social codes. Traditional goblin clans wander the Vrannic Wastes, hunting small prey and herding creatures larger species would consider wild animals. There are also small goblin and hobgoblin cities along the continent's southern coast, and from there some have migrated to Anaya and Sarpor.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Goblins are short, nimble humanoids with large eyes and batlike ears. They are covered in sparse gray or black fur and have skin that is pale pink or pale gray. They are extremely slight and bony, with high metabolisms that necessitate constant snacking. They are obligate carnivores, but many are fond of sweets.
Biological Traits
Goblin characters have ability score modifiers of -2 Strength, +4 Dexterity, -2 Wisdom. Their size is Small and they therefore gain a +1 size bonus to their AC, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a –1 penalty to their Combat Maneuver Bonus and Combat Maneuver Defense, and a +4 size bonus on Stealth checks. They have a base speed of 20 feet. They may choose two of the following racial traits:
Snapper - All goblins have needle-sharp teeth, but goblins with this trait have hardier teeth and strong jaw muscles. They gain a bite attack as a primary natural attack that deals 1d4 points of damage.
Fast Movement - Goblins with this trait are especially quick for their size and have a base speed of 30 feet.
Junk Tinker - Goblins use ramshackle equipment and vehicles that seem like they should never function. Goblins gain a +2 racial bonus on driving checks and on Craft checks to build or repair weapons or vehicles without the proper tools. They can make the attempt with any material that can hold the right shape for a few uses, but normally unfit materials produce items with the fragile quality.
Over-Sized Ears - While goblins’ ears are never dainty, these goblins have freakishly large ears capable of picking up even the smallest sounds. Goblins with this racial trait gain a +4 bonus on Perception checks.
Genetics and Reproduction
They are mammals and give live birth, usually to between three and six pups. Gestation takes around six months.
Goblins and hobgoblins can reproduce together, although any pups will always be hobgoblins and their gestation may be difficult if the parent carrying them is a goblin.
Ecology and Habitats
Goblins and hobgoblins are native to the cold reaches of northern Vrann, but have spread well beyond their ancient stomping grounds. Populations adapted to warmer climes lose much of their fur and some are entirely hairless.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Goblins are obligate carnivores, requiring certain nutrients that can only be obtained from meat, but they can and will eat plant-based foods as well.
Additional Information
Average Intelligence
Goblins greatly admire cunning and wit, although not many are inclined to book learning. Despite popular perception, they are as intellectually capable as any other sapient species.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
All goblins have darkvision.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Goblins do not typically have surnames, but many have titles earned in childhood, based on their deeds, habits, or appearance.
Gender Ideals
Goblins don't pay a lot of attention to gender, but goblin women are typically thought of as being the most aggressive and physically powerful. Most clan leaders are women.
Average Technological Level
Nomadic "country goblins" eking out a life with their clan in the wastes make clever traps to catch food. "City goblins" cooperate with intiss and humans, and there are a few goblin engineers even in Sarpor, although the great majority of them call Vissae home. Because of the goblin propensity for daring, they have something of a negative reputation as mad scientists.
