Imperial Republic of Sarpor
The young Republic arose not twenty years ago through a nearly bloodless revolution. Upon his father’s death, the final emperor Vothis II Rakkad issued a decree that would, nominally at least, curtail his power and distribute it between elected representatives from each city and town. Each has influence proportional to the approximate number of citizens they represent. It has not escaped international notice that the chosen representatives are wealthy, usually noble, and often indebted to the emperor, or that this development came after massive pressure for more local power in the reaches of the Empire; nevertheless, Vothis succeeded in calming the protests without actually sacrificing much of his influence.
Demography and Population
Most Sarporeans are human, with jann forming a sizeable minority and intiss hives present in areas less settled by other species.
Territories
Sarpor is usually divided into three regions, each as large as most other countries: Old Sarpor, Khaedar, and Asshad. The Coldreach Mountains, higher and more treacherous than Anaya’s Bonebreaks, trap rains from the north and west, creating the great expanse of desert on the eastern part of the continent. Most of Old Sarpor’s population lives on the grassy margins of the desert, but the traditional capital is Seraban, a fortress built on an oasis many days’ ride into the desert.
The central region, and the most fertile and populated, is called Khaedar after the kingdom that formerly occupied its northern peninsula. Most of the open land that is not used for agriculture is used to pasture sauropods to be used in the meat industry and as work animals.
The tropical forests and swamps of western Sarpor are known as Asshad, after Lake Shad in the south. It is hostile terrain, and dragonlings frequently stake out claims in locations too remote to be monitored by the Sarporean military. Lake Shad itself is the domain of an especially powerful black dragon known as Kosog.
Military
The Sarporean military is a force to be reckoned with. They have the largest standing army of any state in the world, with two years of compulsory military service for all citizens who wish to enjoy voting rights and access to state services for their families and a large reserve of aetherborn built especially for the conquest of the empire's western frontier.
Technological Level
Great aether-powered railways crisscross the continent, ringing the eastern desert and encroaching upon the western morass. Sarporeans adopted the Anayan airship eagerly and early, and developed many military and commercial models which are produced on assembly lines in the largest cities. Its greatest technological centers are Tevya University in An Tevya Taran and Duzat University in Khord She. Morkhad University in Jharabad is better known as a center of natural sciences and fine arts, although thaumechanists can be found there as well. The first aetherborn were developed in Sarpor as military assets, and the universities still work in conjunction with foreign schools to create newer and more powerful constructs.
Religion
A slim majority of Sarporeans bow before Heaven's Host, with most of the rest walking the Four Ways. Green Sun monasteries can also be found scattered across the continent, and certain fey are well-regarded in particular towns.
Foreign Relations
Sarpor maintains a civil relationship with the Atlantean monarchs, who balk at its overwhelming military might.
