Iftel

Iftel is a secretive and self-isolated country bordering the north of Hardorn and the east of Valdemar. It is most famous for its Wall, a magical barrier that keeps out everything except for a select few.

History

The Chronicles state that Valdemar first encountered Iftel and their barrier quite some time after the Founding. They only allowed a single merchant inside.

Foreign Relations

"Iftel protects itself - by making you forget it exists, and keeping you out if it doesn't want you in."   Iftel does not war with any country, nor do they have much in the way of diplomatic relations. However, they are interested in trade. A note in the Chronicles from Queen Elspeth says, "They've always allowed a single envoy from Valdemar inside their land, so long as it was a member of the Merchant’s Guild ... And they would never permit Knights inside." The traders that are allowed through the barrier never speak of their time within the barrier and only by chance has the capital city even been mentioned.   A long time ago, Iftel used to send envoys to the Court in Valdemar but stopped for unknown reasons. Probably their need to keep peace drove them away from Valdemar and her numerous enemies at the time. Valdemar, traditionally, has always left their suite open, just in case.   According to reports, besides the Merchant's Guild member allowed inside, mercenaries seem to have been able to pass the barrier on occasion. The report received from the Mercenary Guild noted:   "No reason to have a representative there, but it isn't because we've been barred from the place. It was because every time we've sent someone in, he'd nearly died of boredom. Iftel has no bandits. Iftel had it's own standing militia, organized at the county level. Iftel hired no mercenaries - because Iftel needed no mercenaries. Occasionally young folk got restless enough to leave, but that is the only time the Guild ever gets members from Iftel, and they never go back home."   If someone were to try and pass through the barrier they are be forced back. When a mage tried magic against the barrier they disappeared, presumed dead. Anyone who wishes to leave Iftel may do so freely. When asked what it's like inside all anyone would state is that it is merely "boring".
