Urtho

(a.k.a. Mage of Silence)

Urtho is considered to have been one of the most powerful Archmages in the history of Velgareth. He is frequently referred to as "The Mage of Silence" because he used only the exact power necessary for the task, and no more. Without the "loud" magical signature, his creations could not be detected by magical sight, mind-scanning, detection spells, or magical scrying.

As a very young man, Urtho was one of the nearly sixty journeyman mages involved in the first ever Great Work, restoring an eroded floodplain.

Urtho sought to improve the use of magic by making written records, treating it as a measurable science, and pooling the knowledge of a variety of mages. But his passion was to create; he was both artist and inventor, ever pursuing the creation of beauty. He designed some of the sentient magical races of Velgareth, such as the gryphons and lera. He picked up Khal Herta's work with the hertasi, blending more intellegence into each generation of children so that the changes would be smoothly accepted.

Urtho lived in a tower, his second, in a kingdom called Tantara, where he was eventually named Archmage. His tower had multiple floors both above and below ground, as well as outbuildings, all housing the workshops and quarters of a small army of lesser mages and their assistants who worked on Urtho's designs.

In addition to creating living creatures, he was also an expert with Gates. He set up a network of permanent Gates running form his tower to various locations in and around the kingdom.
