Dwarves

Dwarves in Verimitha can be found nearly everywhere. Hundreds of years ago, the dwarves and gnomes had a vast empire that covered huge swaths of the continent of Myrthana. This was because of a vast underground travel system known as Deeprails. Unfortunately, the magics that powered the Deeprails was lost during the last cataclysm. Jealous rivals and monsters from the deep who were held at bay by the gnomes and dwarves and their powers, pounced on the now cut-off territories. Both the gnomes and the dwarves scattered throughout the realm, seeking asylum in other territories. A few strongholds of the old dwarves still exist through sheer stubborn will.

Mountain Dwarves

Mountain dwarves are the descendants of the dwarves of the fallen empire. They have a tendency to be a bit more gruff than their hill dwarf cousins, as the loss of their empire is still fresh in their minds as the fall of the dwarves was only a few generations ago to them. Some mountain dwarves still reside in the few remaining dwarven strongholds scattered throughout the land, the most powerful of which is Gimborimm on the island of Keltland.

Hill Dwarves

Hill dwarves have spent most of their lives living outside of the underground cities of the mountain cousins. They are descended from dwarves that gave up living in the mountains and made a life living among other races, mostly human. Though they mostly get along with other dwarves, it’s not unheard of for mountain dwarves to refer to hill dwarves as “domesticated.”
