The Dreamweaver

Pluto

Written by UmbralGoat

Souls get lonely when their body dies. Shouldn't they have a place they can spend the rest of their days happy?
— Pluto

Pluto is the youngest of members in the uppermost rank of the Celestial Pantheon. He is the third Celestial son of Saturn, born nearly 180,000 years after Jupiter in 935 TA. He is also the father of Kharon.

Pluto is known as the Dreamweaver, the ruler of the Fields of Dreams. It's believed that it is here where dreams are experienced by all Souls through subconscious projection. It is also where Souls are transported when their body dies to remain, cared for by Pluto until they naturally vanish.

Appearance

Relative to his siblings and father, Pluto is very small. Similar to Neptune, his physical form is rather ethereal, but not to the same extent.

He closely resembles a member of the ancient Drælen species; his body is covered in silver fur and he stands on two feet. His head is round and cat-like, with a short muzzle and large green eyes. His ears stand up straight, while his thin purplish horns point backward. His fur is broken up with swirly crimson patterns and stripes across his body.

Personality

Despite the nature of his work, Pluto is regarded as one of the most cheerful Celestials. He is very personable with mortals, always attempting to comfort those nearby when he appears to collect a Soul.

His ability allows him to communicate directly with Souls as if they were living. Not much is known about the Soul's journey to the Fields with Pluto itself, but some say Pluto asks the Souls to divulge stories of their life to him, making a conversation out of it during their trip.

Worship

Pluto is a symbol of death and mourning, but unlike other figures who carry such sorrowful meaning, he is not a being that is feared. His Grace is greatly sought out when loved ones die, or death comes unexpectedly. This typically manifests in dreams; if one meets Pluto in their dreams following the passing of a loved one, it is Pluto's way of telling them their loved one's Soul is in his hands, and is being taken care of in his realm.

History

We have quite a trip ahead of us... Thankfully, all we need to do is rest and wait; would you like to tell me your story?
— Pluto to a Soul

Early Life
Pluto's birth was surprising to most around the world, especially within the Celestial Empire, as he was the first Celestial child of Saturn to be born in almost two hundred millennia. His mother, Espera Nemire was one of Saturn's most famous wives.
Much of his early life was spent in Esperiel, though he would occasionally travel with his parents to Iþivis for Iþivalia. It was during these celebrations that Pluto was exposed most to the public, and the hype surrounding his birth made him exceptionally popular.

Soul Communication
Pluto's power was discovered when he was relatively young. His father believed it was extremely important for his children to learn the history of their family and the world; the tale of Saturn's battle with his chaotic counterpart, the great destruction that led to the extinction of the Ancients, and the rise of the Fælen species under their divine protection.

When Pluto learned that it was the eternal magic of the Ancients' Souls keeping the Risen World afloat, he perked up, and he asked if those were the same invisible beings he was speaking to for some time.

He said they would speak to him in his dreams mostly, but sometimes he could hear them whispering within the wind. Saturn was amused, and claimed it was perhaps his brother playing some joke on him.

But when confronted about this, Neptune found it incredibly intriguing, and he concluded that it must be his ability that began manifesting. Neptune in particular was very interested in his brother's powers, as Souls seemed to be the one of the very few things he did not fully understand in nature. It was through Pluto that Neptune could gain an even more thorough understanding of the Soul's function. Pluto would ask questions on behalf of Neptune to the Ancients' Souls, and would also act as a sort of translator for his brother for conversations.

A Field of Dreams
The dead never return, but here, at least they can chat.
— Pluto

In return, Neptune constructed for Pluto a new realm. It would become his home in the coming centuries, once he had fully realized his abilities. It was a land for the Souls of the dead to remain until they, too, vanished, and it was a land for the Souls of the living to visit while their bodies slept.

The dreams of each Soul are different; the Field appears different for every Soul upon every visit, even for multiple in the same area. Even for Pluto or others who do not dream, it appears as a hazy void of ever-shifting, colorful lights, through which the Souls drift and experience their dreams. Its in this medium that the Souls of the dead can interact with those of the living; appearing in dreams and manifesting as Spirits. Pluto can manipulate the realm's appearance as he wishes, causing certain areas to hold constant, though he mostly enjoys the unpredictability of his home.

I don't know why this hasn't more likes and comments, but I would say, Pluto is a generous, kind and playful entity (as far as I don't know if he is a god per se). His way of speaking to Souls and handling them in the realm of death is par excellence. :)
