Academies

The Pursuit of Knowledge

Academies is the system through which you can further train your character, augmenting their physical and mental capabilities in several ways.   Academies are also referred to as Places of Learning. One can be found in every civilized country except Orde at this time. Each academy will have a limited list of courses that you can sign up for, and you can only attend one academy at a time. Furthermore, some courses have prestige or level requirements for you to attend.   Each course will have a designated tuition fee and difficulty associated with it. The tuition fee is the gold cost you must pay to attend, and the difficulty is the representation of how many crafting days you must spend to complete the course. Fees and difficulty of a course can be reduced based on certain things. The Faction and Country Affiliation section below outlines a couple of discounts that apply to all courses. As for a course's difficulty, some origins or sub-origins may reduce it.   A player can only sign-up and attend one course at a time.   To sign-up make a post in #academies following this format:
[at]economy[at][yourself]
Sign-up(s) Submitted
Starting Gold: #
Total Fees: #
Leftover Gold: #
Do not remove any gold from your character sheet until this sign-up post has been approved by an Economy DM with a thumbs-up reaction.   When you want to spend crafting days on a course, make a post in #academies following this format:
[at]economy [at][yourself]
Spending # crafting days on [course], to a total of # / #
Economy DMs will approve these posts as well, though there's no need to wait on your part for anything, it's just to keep track of you spending crafting days.   When you've spent the last crafting day needed on a course, then you must wait for approval from an Economy DM to change anything relevant on your character sheet.
You are free to drop from a course at any time, but this will waste all spent crafting days on the course. If you sign up for the course again, you will start from 0. If you possess the Keen Mind or Athlete feats, you can retain progress on certain courses, as shown below:

Keen Mind

  • All languages
  • Any feat retraining that would award you with an intelligence, wisdom, or charisma score bonus
  • Any intelligence, wisdom, or charisma ability score retraining or score cap training
  • Any skill retraining that is intelligence, wisdom, or charisma score based
  • Athlete

  • All arms and armor training
  • Any feat retraining that would award you with a strength, dexterity, or constitution score bonus
  • Any strength, dexterity, or constitution ability score retraining or score cap training
  • Any skill retraining that is strength, dexterity, or constitution score based
  • Faction and Country Affiliation

Factions are pivotal in determining academy and course attendance in relation to the country that the academy resides. Thus, which faction you belong to can be beneficial or detrimental to their availability. Straight off, if you belong to a faction that is in a war of annihilation with the Bards College, you cannot attend their academy. This includes factions that are in an alliance war with them. Other factions cannot block anyone from attending academies in their country.   If you are attending the academy that is in the same presiding country as your faction you ignore the prestige and level requirements for attending courses.   Example: If you are a Steton Strider attending the Steton academy you could use any of the Steton academy courses regardless of your prestige or character level.   If your faction has completed the Improve Political Standing agenda for the same presiding country that you are attending an academy, the tuition fee is reduced by 5% each time, to a maximum discount of 20%.   Note: If you are a member of a secret faction, you ignore the above rules that are dependent on your faction membership, unless the relevant authorities are aware of your membership for whatever reason and are on good terms with you (If the authorities want you killed, they aren’t going to give a discount.).

  • Course Fee: 600 gp

This only applies if you are proficient with all in the respective category, such as having proficiency with only one martial weapon does not count for the course difficulty reduction. See the Improved Armory for more details.
  • Both of the above reductions can stack, to a minimum course difficulty of 14 days.

  • Course Availability

For Class Levels and Class Features courses, only the classes noted can be chosen for the purposes of gaining the respective class level or class features.   Spellcasters: They use spell slots
Martial: They don't use spell slots   Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight subclasses obviously use spell slots, and would thus be counted as spellcasters. Classes that gain limited abilities to cast spells do not count for spellcasting, such as the Shadow Monk.   Example: If you’re attending Majital’s academy and are going to retrain a subclass, you can retrain into Arcane Trickster, but you would not be able to retrain out because none of the other rogue subclasses are spellcasters.   Example 2: You cannot retrain sorcerer spells known at Khao.
