Emikan
The Emikan mosquito; or simply Giant Mosquitos, are a species of massive insect found living within the Golgelen Jungle. Despite subsisting exclusively off of blood, they are also known for producing a bizarre, sludge-like nutrient paste from the blood that they consume, and they form gigantic hives that give off a dull, glowing shade of red to attract other vagrant Emikan.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Emikan are gigantic mosquitos; they're equipped with six legs that are covered in a spiked exoskeleton, designed for hooking and latching onto prey. They also possess a long, tendril-like proboscis that they use to siphon blood into, with a massive abdomen that stretches to over three times its original size when fully engorged on blood.
Ecology and Habitats
Emikan require larger fauna in order to thrive; this technically means that their species could, in fact, exist in many parts of the world, but they are left confined to the Golgelen jungle.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Emikan feed upon blood, and a special nutrient-rich gel that they produce as a by product to processing it and the predatory plants that they interact with. Emikan interact uniquely with predatory plants; unlike most insects or wildlife that'd no-doubt wind up snapped in the their jaws, the Emikan 'bribes' these plants by releasing stored blood into the plant's opening.
This coaxes the plant into releasing pollen in return, which the Emikan processes into a red gel-like 'honey'. This gel is stored inside their hives, which grants them an eerie, glowing red shade designed to lure in other Emikan. Emikan are surprisingly social insects; and will always seek to make the largest swarm possible.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Emikan are usually simply slaughtered on sight. Their Chitin, however, is certainly nothing to sneeze at, and is often harvested to be used for strengthening armour in a cheap, yet efficient manner.
Emikan are otherwise simply seen as pests and nothing more; though mavericks often rave about the taste of a boiled Emikan's legs, others would warn you of their horrifically strong, metallic taste.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Emikan see through fluctuations in heat; which is what allows them to better detect a decent blood source for them to feed upon. This also makes them particularly susceptible to fire or high sources of heat, however; Emikan are notably terrified of torches or open fire.
