Grain
Grain is the official title name for the slaves that serve within Dekarth. Despite being seen as second-class citizens, Grains notably carry more rights than your typical slave, however narrow that may be. Grains are given this title because the moment they become one, they lose their rights to a last name; and thus have Grain replace it.
Grain is also meant to emphasize that the value of them is roughly as much as your food store; meaning that they should still be treated with some modicum of respect, but should also always be expected to serve your needs without question.
Career
Other Benefits
Grains gain a lot more benefits when compared to slaves or other labor workers found across the world -- this is due to the Dekarti doctrine of valuing them as much as your food. They're often thus protected from a cruel master, and given decent enough lodgings to help ensure they remain comfortable and willing enough to continue their work.
Grains that perform exceptionally well are often even given their freedom as payment, though this is rare; and the more common treatment to a Grain that excels at their work is for them to be moved towards a wealthy owner that can provide them higher class lodgings and food to indulge in.
Despite that, Grains are still expected to obey without question; and punishments towards them can often be severe should they choose to speak up or disobey orders.
Perception
Purpose
Grains are primarily used to fulfill the grunt work and fulfill the basic labor requirements needed throughout Dekarth; typically, this is farm work, fishing, or in some cases, architectural work.
Social Status
Grains are best described as 'the runts of the litter' when describing an ecosystem. As with their name, they are treated as if they were the grains of food you eat. They aren't spat upon, but are always expected to obey without question.
History
Grains first began as prisoners of war that were taken by Nagi Ra-Hesslar's clan. During this time, Nagi knew that the conquered land she owned needed to be defended, and would thus employ her most trusted generals to watch over the captured prisoners that were left back at their home. They were given simple weapons and encouraged to fight off anyone that would attempt to retake their land, and were promised their home should they manage to stay their ground by the end of the war.
This never happened; all the prisoners later became Grains during Nagi's reign. Grunts and simple servants that were instructed to serve the necessary work back home whilst the more capable soldiers were free to continue their expeditions outside of their city walls.
