Deep gnome
Similar to the duergar and drow, svirfneblin are a subrace of gnomes who took to the Underdark to avoid the tyranny of the Draconic Dominions. They stayed partly because they had adapted to the darkness, and partly because the depths of the earth are where some of the greatest riches can be found. Deep gnomes are great jewelers, and their access to rare materials provides extra income in both raw and crafted forms. They are particularly fond of rubies.
Because of their harsh living conditions, deep gnomes have more of a serious demeanor than forest or rock gnomes. Some even consider them grumpy or paranoid. They hide in deep caverns, protected by winding tunnels, finely engineered traps, and armed guards. They have little trust to spare for anyone besides their own kind, but will deal with traders with curt politeness. And sometimes, when a strike of the pickaxe reveals a glint of bright metal or gemstones, they might actually allow themselves a brief smile.

Art & Architecture
Svirfneblin live mainly in well-defended warrens cut into the stone, but the interiors of their homes are surprisingly comfortable. Their architecture is somewhat similar to that of the forest gnomes in that they like to use natural curves and organic shapes, complementing the shapes of the stone rather than carving it into submission. They favor an open plan, without so much as curtains between rooms. Most dwellings consist of one room, in fact -- just a single communal living space, with a fire pit in the center surrounded by a ledge for sitting. Alcoves are cut into the walls for simple beds, with stone drawers beneath them for storing personal effects; depending on the size of the family, the "bunks" may be stacked two high.
Deep gnome art follows a similar combination of form and function. Their style manages to be simple and elegant, yet practical.
