Great Rift

The western desert of Vesperia is bisected by a canyon known as the Great Rift. Hundreds of miles long and a mile deep, parts of the Rift have their own climate and ecosystems, owing to its depth and the presence of the Rainbow River that carved it into the earth. It was one of the hardest obstacles for explorers surveying the continent, other than the dragons and other winged folk, who passed straight over it to settle the Dragonspire Mountains.

Geography

The Rift is approximately three hundred miles long, with the broadest sections being about twenty across, and the deepest segments are just over a mile from rim to base. The majority of its length was cut open by the rushing waters of the Rainbow River, which runs from the Dragonspire Mountains down to the southwestern coast, and the river is what makes the canyon floor into a kind of oasis. Travelers and explorers crossing the deserts often stop at one of the four main crossings to rest and get some water.
The deserts encroach upon either side of the Great Rift, which is considered the border between them. On the east side is the flat, sandy Low Desert, which fades into the Roaring Plains; on the west side, the rocky, rippling ridges of the High Desert, which climb up to join the Dragonspires.
