Dramatic Hooks
A dramatic hook is a request for a player to have their character take a certain action in the story. At the beginning of each game session each player character should have two dramatic hooks. During the first session the player gets to choose two dramatic hooks on her own. In later sessions the player character receives dramatic hooks from the other players and the GM. When she’s fulfilled a dramatic hook she asks the other players to think of a new one. When a dramatic hook is fulfilled the players marks 200 Experience. A player can ask to exchange one dramatic hook for another one if a game session passes without any dramatic hooks being fulfilled. When the players think of dramatic hooks they may use the following verbs for inspiration (“My character should…”):
- Finish
- Reveal
- Tell
- Visit
- Meet
- Find
- Complete
- Confront
- Investigate
- Lose
- Develop
Finish the sentence with something appropriate. A few examples,
- “My character should visit the place where the kidnapper took you”
- “My character should reveal your infidelity to your wife.”
- "My character should develop feelings for the himbo."
- "My character should lose their spellbook."
The dramatic hooks should be short, weird moments you'd want your character to experience. The player character can be considered to have fulfilled the dramatic hook regardless of what transpired in the scene for as long as the player executed the verb. Don’t dictate what the outcome of the scene should be when determining a dramatic hook. That should be discovered in play.
