Head of House

As the name may imply, the head of house is the offical leader of a noble house.   With the title comes executive powers of the family's finances, lands, and even civil policies.

Qualifications

As head of a noble family and therefore responsible for said family as well as whatever peasantry lives within their land, the head must possess considerable education in subjects including business, law, and politics.

Requirements

The head must be a blooded member of the noble family. This has lead to openly secret practice of nobles adopting able-bodied members of the peasantry or even other noble lines during times of conflict to serve as fodder while protecting the proper heir of their estate.   Traditionally, the possession of magical abilities is also seen as a required qualification. However, this has become rather negotiable in recent years as the magic of certain lines have seemingly dwindled. By default, the eldest child of the previous head will inherit the title, but should an older, non-magical sibling prove more capable in executing the positiion's duty, the latter may contest for the title.

Appointment

The title is offically inherited via acknowledgment by the Court of Lords and royal confirmation.

Duties

The head of house is charged with ensuring the continued prosparity if not betterment of their house. This is pursued through avenues such as business, governence, and service to the kingdom.

Responsibilities

The head is responsible for the governing of their family's domain. Everything from regulating taxes, maintaining law enforcement, and enacting regional legislation falls under their responsibility.

Benefits

As the offical head of house, the title barer is the executer of the family's wealth and assets.   Also, the head of a house in good standing will have access to considrable social and political capitol.

Accoutrements & Equipment

A signet ring bearing the family's crest is traditionally given to the house's head upon appointment.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

The title of head of house can be retracted from someone if they are found to be unsuited for the position.   This verdict can be reached if the sitting head of house is found guilty of crimes such as dereliction of duty, murder, or treason.   Once deemed unfit, the title is striped via royal decree before the Court of Lords and a new head of house is appointed should a qualified member of the family be available.

Cultural Significance

Head of house is considered a very high rank in royal court, especially for families of good standing.

Thank you! I'm trying to give more thought as to how noble families are organized and how that might play into a story.
