Northern Plague
The Northern Plague was a deadly disease that swept through the northern regions of Kyama.
Transmission & Vectors
It is believed that the illness was water-born as most of the villages affected by it were located along the Shian river.
Causes
The common belief is that an unknown pathogen was introduced to and transmitted through the river water.
Symptoms
Historical accounts depict victims of the plague suffering fever and fatigue in its early stages. Left untreated, the symptoms would progress to bouts of nausea and vomiting, severe dehydration, and resporatory issues. In the worst cases, victims would experience dillerium and loss of motor function before their body began to shut down, killing them.
Treatment
Herbal remedies were available that could combat the symptoms and allow victims to recover.
However, these remedies were known mostly by those of the Yoru clans. While trade with the tribes allowed some remedies to make it across the river, the deathtoll was nevertheless skewed heavily towards the southern villages.
History
The plague was decried as an act of aggression by the Yoru for attempts by the Imerial government to assimilate them into the empire. Accusers cited the northern clans' proficiency with herbs and poisons, claiming it an easy feat for them to have tainted the river marking their border with a toxin they had the antidote for.
The Yoru clans universally denied these accusations, but were unable to present an alternative reason for the disease's uptick.
These accusations proved to be the final straw that broke the already strained relations between the Yoru and Imperial Kyama. In what became known as the Hokubu March, Imperial forces were soon sent north to invade, raid, and conquor any and every Yoru village they came across.
Within months, the Yoru people were either forcefully assimilated into Imperial Kyama or forced to flee across the sea in the hopes of finding sanctuary on mainland Vestria.
Cultural Reception
In the midsts of accusations made about its source, the illness bears the derisive nickname of the 'Yoru Plague'.
