Steam Carriage

Meant to act as a proof of concept for the potential ue of steam engines, the steam carriage was a relatively small-scale use the technology. Had it been successful, the carriage would have been a revolution in travel alleviating costs associated with caring for horses and other traditional maintainces.   Sadly, it was not to be.

History

When the carriage was unveiled at the Artificer Festival and took its inagural circuit around the city, it had a small collision with a horse cart. No one was harmed initially, but the impact compromised the steam vents, leading to a massive build up in pressure.   Ten minutes after leaving the horse cart behind, the boiler exploded, killing the carriage's driver and inventor as well as severly injure bystanders nearby.   The resulting investigation found several safeguards that had not been included in the carriage's design such as redundant steam vents and a way to remove or deactivate the mana crystals in case of emergency. Once the findings were made known, the Artificer Guild found itself under serious scrutiny as they already had a reputation for their members being lax when it came to basic safety practices.

Legacy

In the wake of the disaster and resultant blowback to the guild, laws and policies were passed by civil authorities and the guild respectively instituting much stronger demands for safety standards. If an artificer was found to violate the new rules, the guild would be partially held accountable for damages while the artificer in question would have their guild membership suspended or even permanently revoked for repeat offenses.   As for the steam carriage itself, the horrific publicity and fallout left the entire project shelved indefinitely. While the idea still had promise, precious few artificers were willing to tie their name to such a black mark in the history of their profession.

Power Generation

The carriage is powered by a steam engine mounted on the back of the vehicle. To promote longevity as well as cut overall fuel costs, the boiler is heated by Fire Crystals instead of simple coal.   Prior to its infamous debut, this was seen worthwhile innovation, especially by city dwellers who were

Propulsion

The steam generated by the boiler is diverted through a gearbox where the driver is able to regulate how much power is transferred to the wheels and axle of the carriage.

Nice work! Very interesting point in having it not be used, and that the failure was the root of the change!

Thanks! I honestly love the trope of Alchemists/Artificers being accidental fireworks factories. Sadly, I don't think that would work in my story, so I figured I'd write that they accidentally ended up inventing OSHA.
