Session 1: The Beginning
General Summary
The story begins with the party travelling by caravan to the capital of Braggo, where most of the recruiting for the crusade against the demons is taking place. Forced to stop briefly after one of the oxen broke a leg and one of the cart axels got damaged, they talk for a bit among themselves and to other members of the caravan. Azrion learns from a halfling to steer clean of the Greenbriar Guild, who have their hands in a lot of different business, and no issue with getting those hands dirty. The caravan leader, Aldor Daleson, soon comes over to tell them that the axel has been shored up, and they need to get moving to the small town of Trarsk before the storm hits.
In the darkness they overshoot the town by a few miles, but are still able to make it to Trarsk around midnight before the storm gets too bad. The town is almost entirely dark and shuttered, except for the lights glowing in the windows of the Blacktooth Bar & Inn, and the smoke rising from the dragon-head chimney of the stone building at the top of the hill.
The party goes to the tavern, and learn from the barkeep, a fellow calling himself Jeb the Dragonslayer, that people have been staying in to avoid the animated scarecrows that have recently been plaguing the town and stealing bread. Pug and Emberanne get into a drinking contest. Emberanne steals some beef, which doesn't go too terribly well for her as she gets punched by the halfling chef, charged 10 gold and kicked out. Leo drinks a lot of milk. Good times were had all around.
The next morning they go to investigate the building on the hill, which turns out to be a temple to Josbrunar. Creed praises the sun, and the others talk with the high shaman, Talisyl Blackbrook. He tells them the basics of Josbrunar's tenets, and gives Azrion spare copies of The Ascent and the Code of Flame. He also offers more information on the scarecrow situation and tells the party of a halfling and a bard who have been looking into the matter. While at the temple, Emberanne uses prestidigitation to make Creed believe he saw a holy vision reading "When the time is right, look to the north."
Creed asks Talisyl about visions, and he says that they're certainly not unheard of, particularly for clerics and paladins of Josbrunar.
The party then goes back to the Blacktooth bar and track down this halfing and bard duo. The halfling, Halfpint, is amiable enough, though the bard Ragi is a grumpy and heavily tatted man. Creed recognizes one of the symbols on his tattoos as a symbol relating to the demon lord Gartarthus, but doesn't bring it up. When Emberanne asks, Ragi simply says the tattoos symbolize different aspects of his life and people who are important to him.
Halfpint and Ragi agree to let the party join their investigation of the wheat field the scarecrows seem to be coming from, and Halfpint promises 2 gold apiece for their help. They all head to the wheat field, which just appears to be... well... a wheat field. They then investigate the farm house nearby, and Adrytheth casts speak with animals on a sheep, who tells them about a "Wheat Witch" in the field. Emberanne then spends an hour casting find familiar on the sheep, and sends it off, with Leo still clinging happily to its back, to go find the wheat witch.
The sheep & Leo come to a clearing in the wheat and see a woman in tattered brown robes grinding wheat.
