Mariapool

Mariapool was a sleepy, backwater town smack-dab in the middle of a hot, humid, sub-tropical peninsula. The most notable thing about Mariapool was it’s namesake Maria’s Pool, a hotspring that is purported to have healing properties. As a result, Mariapool was a destination for the ill and infirm, all hoping for a miraculous cure from the steamy waters. Aside from this, Mariapool was just another tiny town on the rolling hills. Nothing much of interest ever happened in Mariapool. Until the Happening changed everything. Things are going fine for Mariapool, then one day there is sudden rush of wind and a loud popping noise in everyone’s ears accompanied a bright flash of blue-white light. When people could start to see again from the flash of light, they were overwhelmed by waves of nausea. After a few moments, the townsfolk recovered and began to realize the world around their town was different. Completely different in facth. Whereas Mariapool was quite suddenly in the middle of a temperate grassland that appeared to stretch as far as anyone could see. The first forays outside the hip-height walls around the town didn’t end well for the explorers. So, the town has begun taking volunteers. You, of course, are one of the people who stepped forward.

Demographics

Mariapool is dominated by humans and halflings, which each boast about 40% of the population. Gnomes are the most common group after these two, making up about 10% of the town. The remaining 10% is roughly evenly split between the other races. Dragonborn are completely unheard of, and would likely be seen as a lizardman of some sort. Tieflings are an pariah race that have been persecuted and hunted in the past.

Defences

Mariapool has never had to worry too much about defending itself as its native world was rather peaceful. There is a small detachment of city guard run by Captain Montenegro, a competent military veteran. Beyond this, there is a hip-high wall that encircles the town that has, in the past, served as little more than a marker for when one has actually arrived in Mariapool. Now, it appears to be the line between what came with Mariapool from the old world and what didn't. It also appears to act as some sort of barrier, keeping the wilds out and the citizens of the town safe from danger.

Guilds and Factions

Mariapool is too small to have a strong guild presence. However, there are guild offices (or at least officers) from a number of the more important guilds from Mariapool's native world.   The Medici Bank maintains a small office in Mariapool. Hanna Cortez, a middle-aged halfling who has lived in Mariapool her entire life, runs the bank office with clockwork precision. While the bank has but a small vault, meager cash reserves, and is not disconnected from the much larger web of Medici Bank offices that span Mariapool's native world, the bank is a secure place to make deposits.   The Explorer's Guild is just now being formed by Mayor Thimbletoe and Captain Montenegro to organize and coordinate the efforts to explore the new world, secure the resources the town needs, and assure the citizens of Mariapool don't wander off and get themselves killed in the wilds.
