Soulbound Doll

Warning: Untested

About

Soulbound Dolls rarely possess a true sentience of their own, but sometimes a spark of intelligence is transferred with the soul fragment used to animate them.   These small, sentient dolls contain a fragment of another creature’s soul. The binding process strips some of the individuality from the soul, but fragments of the original creature’s personality remain. Creators of soulbound dolls typically take care to take soul fragments from people whose personality traits the crafters wish to see in their dolls.   A soulbound doll’s body is made from wood, stone, or porcelain, with one exquisite item worth at least 300 gp to serve as the soul focus. Creation requires a soul fragment from a deceased creature that must die at some point during the creation of the doll—as a result, most soulbound dolls are created by evil spellcasters. Other spellcasters can create soulbound dolls, but if the donor soul is unwilling, they may have alignment repercussions. An unwilling soul can resist the procedure with a DC 20 Will save. Stripping a soul fragment from the dead does not prevent the rest of the soul from continuing on to the afterlife, nor does it prevent the body from later being resurrected or raised from the dead.

Physical Description

Soulbound Dolls are made from wood, stone or porcelain, with an exquisite item worth at least 300gp serving as the soul focus. Sometimes, their creators craft their bodies to resemble the person from whom the soul fragment was taken.

Society

Dolls are usually used as companions, surrogate children, servants, guards, sentries or even spies by their creators. Sentient soulbound dolls are so rare that they do not have a formal society, but prefer to integrate themselves into groups or communities with younger members or those who remind them of those their donors were associated with.

Alignment & Religion

Soulbound dolls tend heavily towards true neutral, but a particularly powerfully aligned soul can influence the dolls alignment as well.

Adventurers

As delicate as they are, and as eerie as others find them, dolls have a hard time fitting into any particular society and depend on their allies to defend them when adventuring. When entering a new place, many dolls will play the part of inanimate objects.

Construct
Soulbound dolls are technically animated objects and, as such, do not have a Constitution score. Any DCs or other statistics that rely on a Constitution score treat a construct as having a score of 10 (no bonus or penalty).   Furthermore, dolls cannot heal damage on their own. They can be repaired through the use of the Craft Construct feat or spells such as make whole.   Dolls are not subject to ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, energy drain, or nonlethal damage. They are also immune to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects or is harmless).   Dolls do not breathe, eat, or sleep, unless they want to gain some beneficial effect from one of these activities. Dolls cannot die from massive damage, but they are immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or fewer.   However, they are hard to destroy and gain 20 bonus hit points at character creation.

Racial Traits

Senses
Darkvision: Dolls can see in the dark up to 60 feet.   Low-light Vision: Dolls can see twice as far as a race with normal vision in conditions of dim light.
Other
Mindful: Although most constructs do not have a mind, soulbound dolls are formed by using the soul of a real living creature. Because of this, dolls have sentience, a personality which is individually theirs, and the ability to scheme and plan on their own. Furthermore, dolls are affected mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms).   Reformed: Although most constructs cannot be raised or resurrected, a soulbound doll’s identity is tied to the donor soul not to her material frame. Thus, even if the material frame of a soulbound doll is destroyed, the soul can be captured again and essence of the doll can be reformed into a new body via the Craft Construct feat.
