The Phalanx

When the Corr explorers inadvertantly gave rise to "the Devil", it was quickly decided that the laters minions needed to be held in check. Thus, the formation of the Phalanx occurred. Warriors tasked with countering the greatest enemy Corr had ever faced.
The Phalanxes duties include:

1. Counter the machinations of the devil wherever possible
2. Recruit worthy members into the Phalanx (provided they are trustworthy enough to keep the secrets of the valley)
3. Gather information and technology as an archive of mankinds achievement in order for it to be save in the event of an apocalypse (such as the one foretold to occur at the hands of the Devil)

Composition

Manpower

The members of the Phalanx, study the ways of the Corr.  Which is to say they are encouraged to become the best possible specimen they can be with gifts they were given.

Weaponry

The Corr at the time of their fall was the most technologically advanced race in the galaxy.  Many Phalanx members wield weapons from that time.

Monk like training focused on bringing out an individuals unique gifts.

Logistical Support

The stores of wealth and knowledge of Shangri-la are at the Phalanxes disposal.

Auxilia

Ohibi clansmen are sometimes used as minor members of the Phalanx.

Recruitment

The members of the Phalanx are brought to the Hidden Valley where they are judged (see the novel Lost Horizon to see how this works).   And on rare occasions when someone wonders into the valley they are given an opportunity to join if they display the appropriate talent.
