Before the war, the world lived earnestly and peacefully, worshipping their gods and living their lives mostly unbothered by the evil that lurked at the edges of the world. The world was huge, lively, and connected through shared experiences and gods who were fiercely protective of their worshippers. Magic was abundant, nature was bright and lush, and lifespans were long and mostly happen.   The Great Unveiling changed all of that.   Most documents from that time have been lost, but scholars have been able to piece together some information that puts the events in context.   A group of gods, their identities unclear, made a grab for power. Their combined forces were underestimated by the other gods, which led to severe losses and a hasty retreat. While the gods regrouped, the agitators took the chance to decimate the mortal population, razing the land and making a large portion of the world uninhabitable. Helm and his worshippers, along with Tyr and Valkur, were able to shield Volatia from the worst of the battle, protecting what remained of the mortal races.   When the dust from the battle settled, many of the gods were dead and all but the land Volatia sat upon was uninhabitable. Now referred to as the Uninhabitable Zone, it borders the north and east of Volatia, though the country is well-protected from the mutations that arise within the Uninhabitable Zone.   Today, Volatia is a recovering world. Technology is mostly back to the point it was before the Great Unveiling, although scholarly pursuits are still far behind the point they used to be. A lot of lost knowledge can be found in the Uninhabitable Zone, but it's expensive and dangerous, so the exploring is typically left to adventuring parties.   The land of Volatia is lush and beautiful, easily thriving in what remains of the world. Ruins dot the landscape of the country, symbols of a bygone era that are overtaken more and more each day. Civilization moves forward, however. While the world is less and less hostile every day, the fear of another godly war looms over the population. Communities grow and change but the overarching feeling of the remaining mortals has remained the same over the centuries since the Great Unveiling: survive. Survive together, survive solely with your own kind, or survive on your own. Doesn't matter how, just survive.   After all, civilization may need you when the gods go to war.
