Burning of Wanborne
Escalating pirate tensions
The Burning of Wanborne was a short and intense battle, lasting only a single night, in the harbour of Wanborne. The crew of The Black Storm ambushed The Golden Damnation as it was raiding the city after its inhabitants had failed to pay the crew due to lack of funds.
The Conflict
Prelude
Tensions had been rising in the pirate communities as less and less merchants took the usual paths between the ports between continents. Bounty was rare and lacking to make up for the hard work at sea. One of the most well-known ships of the area was The Golden Damnation, a large and heavy ship led by a, at that time, famous captain. The ship had during later years taken up negotiation with the town of Wanborne, just south of the coast of Varenlett, on Delnat. Trading the town's safety against other pirates, the townfolk themselves paid a heavy tax to support the protection. But as less and less merchant ships arrived at the city to trade, the town was slowly running out of money.
Deployment
The Golden Damnation came to collect, but found the townsfolk unable to pay up. Even collecting all of the townfolks' most valuable items, the crew of the pirate ship would accept no other than outright payment. When the town failed to reach those standards, the ship sailed out of the harbour, turned all its cannons on the city, and fired.
Another ship patrolling the area was The Black Storm, on which Jamys Windtaker sailed as a crewmember. The much smaller ship had been following The Golden Damnation at a distance, with a stealthy plan to get in on the payment from Wanborne. Seeing the sudden attack on the city, the captain wanted to turn around, but Jamys confronted him, encouraging the man to engage while The Golden Damnation wasn't paying attention.
The captain refused, but instead of taking the order, Jamys rallied the crew onto his side. The captain, still refusing and trying to bring the crew under his command again, drew his sword to cut down Jamys. But Jamys, a much greater swordsman even at that time, was quick to counter, and slayed the captain when the captain failed to return the sparring. Standing on deck with a crew without a captain, Jamys took to the ship's wheel to launch the attack.
Battlefield
The Black Storm got off many shots before The Golden Damnation was to notice, and even then, it took the ship way too long to turn its cannons on its attackers. The Black Storm, being a much smaller and more agile ship, evaded the counterattack. As the cannons flew, many from both ships hit the innocent town as a consequence, but the crews were too caught up in the fight to care.
The Golden Damnation, though it had gotten off a few good hits, was slowly losing the battle. It sailed away from the city, out towards open sea instead of towards Varenlett, taking on water as it went.
The Black Storm set off in pursuit, and, the time just having passed midnight, with that the battle was over. Leaving the city of Wanborne burning in the night.
