Fahn Run

Racing the Fahn, Doing the Fahn Run

At the beginning of every New Year, the Fahn Run is held in the city of Durvaine on Apattla. As citizens await the coming of The Fahn, a horse race is set up in the centre square, where the Fahn will appear.   As the Fahn passes into Vyngaard, the race starts and the contestants all try to outride the train. The race is a contest in which horse and rider can keep up with the train for the longest. The last horse and rider to be passed by the nose of the train, wins and ends the race.

History

The Fahn Run was born only a few years after the implementation of the New Year's celebration, as many tried to run along the Fahn when it came into Vyngaard. Bets were placed on who could run the furthest before the Fahn had passed, but that was never enough. Horses were brought in, and instead people raced along with the Fahn, until it would finally pass when the horses tired.   The first official Fahn Run was held on order by the council in Dunvaine in Year 4. It pulled a great crowd and was so embraced by the people that it became an annual event.

Execution

Registration starts at the first day of Fasin, the last month before New Years. A maximum of 40 contestants may enter, and only 20 will race at the front. To qualify for running the front, one has to have won the backrace. The win will gain you a lifetime qualification.   The frontliners line up at the square and prepare for the Fahn to pass through to Vyngaard. The clock counts down and the race starts as soon as the Fahn appears. They race south along the tracks for as long as they can. When the back of the Fahn finally comes through, the backliners start their race.   The frontliners' goal is to not let the Fahn pass them, and the backliners' goal is to no let the Fahn outrun them. As long as one can keep up, they are in. As the Fahn passes each rider, they are eliminated. The last rider that can keep up with the Fahn wins.

Participants

Any good rider might apply for the Fahn Run, but only the most prominent in other competitions during the year are entered. These riders and horses train all year. More often than not, the owner of the horse is a person of wealth having hired a good rider, or the rider is very wealthy themselves. It is quite a high class event.
