Kelpie

Brief

There are very few things that can survive in the Toxic Sea - the interior sea that has become poisoned by the presence of the mech elves. Luckily for them, the kelpie seems to do quite well in this oily polluted sea. It has become one of the only animals that can exist in the waters beneath the metal towers and doesn't suffer any negative effects as a result of the run off. Rather, they've flourished as the other animals in the sea, and their predators, have died off. Since the mech elves have cultivated water garden of clams, the kelpie don't even really need to hunt. Thus, they are rather docile and easy going around the mech elf cities and elves in general. Fast swimmers, social creatures, the kelpie have almost the entire toxic sea to themselves. As such, they've the space to grow to

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Kelpie travel in 'herds' in the wild, ranging anywhere from 5 to 30 animals. While they are quite docile around mech elf cities and elves - as they've become synonymous with a source of food - the kelpie can become rambuncious and rough with one another. Especially when it comes to 'mating season'. Their behavior in this regard reflects their land-bound brethren. One 'stallion' will seek to control a herd for a duration and mate with the available females.   Outside of this mating season, the males aren't always aggressive with one another and can tolerate one another in the same herd-family group.

Growth Rate & Stages

Born kelpie are fully capable of swimming but they have short, blunted teeth and would still require their parents protection if there was anything in the toxic sea that still hunted them. Even so, they remain in family groups given their social nature but there isn't a real sense of danger anymore. Kelpie foals will wander - but never too far - and will learn how to seek out and break open clam from their mother. It takes about three years for a kelpie to reach adulthood.

Dietary Needs and Habits

There is very few things that actually survive in the Toxic Sea as the kelpie do, and nothing as big as they. Their predators have long die off, leaving them only with a few small species of fish, clam, and seaweed that have managed to survive. Given their wildly adaptive nature, if it's organic, the kelpie can and will try to eat it. This has included unfortunate mech elves that have fallen off their metal cities.   While it's noted kelpie are docile around mech elves and they will not attack them, they will eat a dead or dying mech elf.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Though the waters of the Toxic Sea have become thick and black, with an oily sheen on the surface in some areas, the kelpie doesn't seem to have any problems in moving around in the water. The surface to breath, breaking through whatever sludge or oil that might be residing. Their spines and scales don't seem to suffer any ill effects from the metallic run off.
Conservation Status
While they were wild initially, the kelpie are now a staple of, and cultivated by, the mech elves.
