Deineipsa
Thousands of years ago, the entire island of Deineipsa was ruled by the serpent-people called the Naga. Under their divine ruler, all civilized people were united and they enjoyed a time of peace and prosperity. However, sometime in the past, an event triggered the destruction of the once majestic empire. Now the ruins of the nagas’ great cities lie in the center of the landmass, reclaimed by the jungle and meandering rivers. Many treasures and dangers are said to lie in this dark interior, tempting brave and foolish alike.
The humans and other folk of the island fractured first into tribes, then city-states and warred with each other. It was only after many generations of conflict, did the descendants of the snake-gods finally reach a kind of balance. By establishing a complex series of courtly protocols and traditions, the monarchs of the various nations are able to avoid all-out war. However, over time, these systems fostered a culture of status and intrigue that has led to a perplexing array of opulent court palaces, noble titles, and conspiracies of the most dangerous variety.
It is the deadly and treacherous nature of these labyrinthine politics as much as their heritage that leads outsiders to call Deineipsa the “Serpent Courts.” Many nobles of nearby kingdoms such as Yudiguo, Bhodan, and the merfolk of Mhasamoti send their young aspiring heirs to learn the intricate ways of courtly machinations from these shrewd folks. Likewise, the feathered people of the Thepuksee are welcomed in virtually any court for their grace and enchanting voices.
