Fawi

will appear in the Bukana Setting Guide
Ethnolinguistic Summary
Region: Bukana
Language: Fawi Language . Related to Kagimongan
Species: Human. Some assimilated dwarf (terrace dwarf & hill dwarf ) and the occasional minotaur.   The uplands of a number of islands are home to the Fawi tribes. These people pride themselves on avoiding “corruption” by foreign cultures. Most still practice headhunting, but this has been mitigated in recent centuries by the development of a complex series of ceremonial peace treaties among them. These people grow rice on stunning terraces that the local dwarves claim to have taught them how to construct.   Their communities are led by a council of elders who make decisions by consensus. Their judicial system uses trials by ordeal that frequently involves hot blades and acts of endurance. Men tend to wear loincloths and gstrings, while women wear ankle-length skirts. While separate castes of rich and poor are maintained, social mobility is common and based on hard work and battle prowess.   Beliefs The Fawi are highly superstitious and have ritualized many aspects of day-to-day life. They believe that spirits are ever-present and must constantly be appeased lest they inflict hardship upon the offenders. It is common for tribes to erect wooden or stone idols around their land to ward off intruders and evil spirits. While they venerate many, many spirits, their pantheon of gods is rather small compared to some other cultures of Bukana.   Dev. Notes - Inspired largely by the Ifugao and other upland peoples of the Philippines.
