Lampasigan

will appear in the Bukana Setting Guide
The Lampasigan culture developed along the shores of the northern islands, particularly where rivers meet the sea. They were among the first to develop large barangays that would become the bustling ports for which Bukana is known in distant lands. In fact, the Lampasigan claim to have been the first to make contact with Bhodani traders at the barangays that would one day form Baligat Port. Because of their early and continuous contact with outsiders, the Lampasigan have adopted many ideas and aesthetics from foreign cultures, particularly Bhodan.   Beliefs They believe that it was their patron deity, Malawo who slew the Bakunawa to form Bukana. Once the god welcomed them upon their arrival to the archipelago, they say that he entrusted its protection to them. They are a romantic people, who tell many tales of bravery and self-sacrifice, as well as love and loyalty. Their warrior-caste is known as the Maharlika and are renowned for their bravery and prowess. Their language is used as a trade tongue for Bukana, and has been altered greatly with the addition of many loanwords so that now it has become known as Bukanon Common.   The Lampasigans believe in countless spirits and deities. Chief among them is Malawo, the creator and protector of Bukana and its people. He is said to hold his court in the highest of the Sky-Realms, Kaluwalhatian. He is the head of a trinity of gods that watch over the islands. Originally, these included Matiisan, the lord of mountains and hunting and Kasaganaan, the goddess of agriculture and good harvest. However, Matiisan left the court to live alone with his dog in the Middle-Realm. Dagat, the wrathful master of the sea took his place. Dagat is a hermaphroditic deity who is married to Kasaganaan. Their child, Nagkagulo, goddess of rain and wind, along with two of the three fabled daughters of Malawo also commonly attend their court.   In the Under-Realm, dwells Payapa, brother to Malawo, who was cast down for his evil deeds. Here, he lords over the shameful dead and sends his powerful minions out to test mortals with temptation. It is these entities that are the source of many of the native warlocks of Bukana. His court is attended by all manner of evil spirits, aswang, and fiends.   Dev. Notes - Inspired largely by the Tagalog of the Philippines.
